The Australian Broadcasting Corporation have once again extended their lead over other networks by introducing a free news bulletin service for iPhone/iPod touch devices.

The network’s iPhone application — which has been downloaded over 290,000 times since launch — previously supported access to ABC television podcasts directly from the device over WiFi, including ‘Good Game’, ‘At The Movies’ and ’7:30 Report’.

Now the app has been updated to include up-to-date 90-second news bulletins, which can be streamed over WiFi and 3G connections.

The bulletins are broken down into various categories, including news, sport, world, weather, business and entertainment.

The update also introduces live radio streaming for ABC radio stations including triple j, NewsRadio, Radio National, ABC Dig Music, ABC Jazz, ABC Country and ABC Classic FM.

Currently no other Australian free-to-air network has invested in developing applications for the App Store, although FOXTEL recently launched an application allowing iQ users to browse the FOXTEL EPG and schedule recordings.

Download the Australian Broadcasting Corportation app free from the iTunes Store.
