Justin Hartley talks about upcoming episodes of ‘Smallville’
Newsarama talks with Justin Hartley about his arc this season and what’s in store for the tele-movie “Absolute Justice” and beyond.
Newsarama: I know you have a run in with Dark Archer in the upcoming episode. So can you give us some info on the relationship you guys have? Sort of set it up for us?
Justin Hartley: Sure. So basically we’ve all seen Oliver take this turn for the worse this year and then kind of recover from it. And right now he’s on the brink of recovering from this whole downward spiral thing and trying to figure out who he is and making sure…he’s teetering back and forth, and I don’t think he really trusts himself that much. But he’s on this good path right now. So what happens is, because timing is everything on ‘Smallville’, right? This Dark Archer, this guy from Oliver’s past comes back to kind of claim what’s rightfully his. They were both members of this underground society and one of the deals of this society is, when you get older, your apprentice is supposed to take your life so that you don’t watch yourself decay and all that stuff. So he comes back to claim that, and people around Oliver are kind of mistaking him for Oliver. They’re not quite sure if it’s Oliver. Maybe he’s lost his mind, maybe he really is a bad guy. So they start second guessing him, which is kind of depressing in a little way. But they square off at the end, and…I’m not sure if I should tell you what exactly happens, but I am in the next episode, so I don’t die. I can tell you that. [laughs] They square off, and Oliver is trying to claim what is his, saying, ‘Look. I’ve changed. I’m a different person. That’s not me anymore.’ So there is a big face off there.
Nrama: We know that Speedy is back.
Hartley: Yes. She’s one of the victims of the Dark Archer. What he’s doing is, when Oliver denies him, when he says, ‘Look, I’m not part of that anymore,’ he stars going after people that Oliver cares about, so he goes after Speedy and Lois (Erica Durance) and Chloe (Allison Mack), and it’s only a matter of time before things get really bad. So he’s got to figure out a way to stop this guy from doing what he’s doing, without giving this guy what he wants. So it’s kind of an interesting little situation he’s got himself into.
Nrama: Everyone is really freaking out about the two hour “Absolute Justice”. If Twitter is to be believed, it’s going to be the highest rated show in television history.
Hartley: [laughs] Good!
Nrama: So how does “Disciple” set up “Absolute Justice”? Or does it?

The Silver Banshee comes to ‘Smallville’
TVGuide has learned that DC Comics villain ‘Silver Banshee’ will appear on the 16th episode of season 9 titled “Escape”.
Smallville is adding yet another DC villain. Odessa Rae has been cast as the Silver Banshee, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.
Rae (Leverage) will first appear as Siobhan McDougal, aka the Silver Banshee, in Episode 16, “Escape.”
The Banshee is a vengeful spirit of a fallen Gaelic heroine. She’s accidentally released from the underworld, and takes out her vengeance at an unassuming country bed and breakfast. Guess who just happens to be staying at the B&B? Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling).
Rae joins the line of DC heroes and villains being added toSmallville this season, including Icicle (Wesley MacInnes), Dr. Fate (Brent Stait), Hawkman (Michael Shanks), Star Girl (Britt Irvin) and Amanda Waller (Pam Grier).

Perry White returns to ‘Smallville’!
Just yesterday we had the news that Annette O’Tool (Martha) is returning to ’smallville’. Well now we have Michael McKean (Perry White) returning with Annette on the penultimate (ep. 21) episode of season 9. Both might be regular’s for season 10.
Could Michael Rosenbaum be next?!
On the heels of my scoop thatAnnette O’Toole is returning as Ma Kent, executive producer Brian Peterson confirms to me exclusively that Smallville is also bringing back Michael McKean as Perry White at season’s end.
“We’re thrilled to have Michael back on the show,” says Peterson, “and to be able to link it with the anticipated return of Martha Kent is just a phenomenal way to gear up to the end of the season.”
Peterson also reveals that the iconic character’s latest trip through Smallville will bring him “closer to his destiny” than ever before, adding, “We finally get to see the legendary introduction between Perry White and the intrepid Lois Lane.”
O’Toole and McKean (who, as you know, are married in real life) will appear in this season’s penultimate episode (No. 21).
What say you Smallville fans? Stoked beyond belief? Do you think/hope Lex will be next? Sound off below!

Martha Kent returns to ‘Smallville’!
Ausiello from E.W confirms that Annette O’Tool (Martha Kent) is returning to ‘Smallville’ near the end of season 9, sometime in May. And there’s the possibility for her to return as a regular if season 10 is a go.
Martha Kent is winging it back toSmallville, and word is it’s not to dispense motherly advice.
Sources confirm to me exclusively that Annette O’Toole has inked a deal to reprise her role as Clark’s mom later this season.
Producers are still working out the exact timing of Martha’s reappearance, but a Smallvilleinsider tells me it’ll most likely fall during May sweeps. That same source hints that the mother-son reunion will be rocked by an “unexpected surprise” or two.
O’Toole last appeared in season 6 when Martha moved to Washington to become a U.S. senator.
Thoughts? Have you missed Martha? Do you hope she’ll stick around for more than one episode? Care to guess what the “unexpected surprise” is? Sound off below!

CONFIRMED: ‘Smallville’s’ return pushed back to Jan 29th
The CW is set to delay the return of ‘Smallville’ next week for a Telethon hosted by George Clooney. Update: This is in fact correct after all, 9×11 “Warrior” will be left out of the schedule and the tele-movie “Absolute Justice” will air on the same date.
Due to the tragic events in Haiti the CW along with every other U.S network will contribute in the form of a MTV telethon presented by George Clooney and others not yet mentioned.
Via CW’s twitter page:
“Looks like the return of #Smallville will be pushed back 1 week – CW will participate in the Hope For Haiti telethon Friday, Jan 22nd at 8pm”
In my opinion this could be a form of sabotage by CW president Dawn Ostroff to cancel the show. The reason I say this because she is relying solely on the ratings of the 2 hour tele-movie “Absolute Justice” with guest star Michael Shanks of Stargate fame. Delaying Smallville’s return will place the movie right in the middle of the Winter Olympics, this obviously is not acceptable since it would ultimately mean the end of the road for the long running series.
The roller-coaster ride is in full swing now. Either way this is a good cause and I’m not against it, but I am speaking in defense of Smallville. There is a 2 year plan for the series to finish properly, I hope it does.
Here are the options on the table at the moment:
Air “Disciple” next Wednesday (free spot available but unlikely to happen)
Air both “Disciple” & “Warrior” back to back on the 29th
Leave “Warrior” out of the schedule for later in the season (Season 9 episodes are produced out of order this year) [Confirmed Option]
One of these options need to take place so that “Absolute Justice” airs on schedule, if not.. Well this is the last year of Smallville.
That’s how bad it is now, one false move and we’re done. But let’s prey it doesn’t happen.

‘Smallville’ Season 10: Things are looking even brighter…
Things are looking even more certain that ‘Smallville’ is headed for at least one more year. But right now the roller-coaster ride has just begun.
Today The CW held their part of the Television Critics Association press tour, and several journalists caught up with CW Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff to discuss the prospects of Smallville going for a tenth season.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, Ostroff sounds optimistic about the show’s chances, and seems pleased with the show creatively. But regarding whether or not the show will be back for another year, Ostroff says the decision will come in May. “[The producers] haven’t even pitched us the last episodes yet, so we haven’t even gotten to how we’re going to deal with the last episode and whether it’s a season finale or series finale,” Ostroff said to Ausiello. “But right now, I think it’s just aseason finale.”
Ostroff also made chances sound good in an interview with IGN’s Eric Goldman. “If the show doesn’t come back, I think it will be a sort of really last minute decision, because either development [for new series] was great or the show wasn’t doing as well on Friday nights. But we still have a whole half a season to go before we have to determine that,” she said.
So, while no official decision has been announced, at least things ARE sounding good.

A curious case of dejavu on ‘Smallville’
Ausiello of E.W fills us in on some highlights for the second half of season 9. Update: We now know that the first question is for the 16th episode titled “Escape”.
Update: We now know that the 1st question is for the 16th episode titled “Escape”.
Queston 1: I need a Smallville scoop. The most delicious one you can share. —Bryan
Ausiello: This one’s pretty yummy: Later this season, Clark takes Lois on a romantic getaway to a bed and breakfast. Tasty, right? Well, there’s more. Guess who’s also enjoying a quiet weekend away at the same B&B? Oliver and Chloe! Bon appétit!
Question 2: We need a Smallville spoiler. —Nelson
Ausiello: This one isn’t going to taste nearly as good as the last one. Rumor has it Clark will get infected with red kryptonite again.
