The 52nd Annual TV Week Logie Awards are still two months away, but already voting has begun for both public and industry voted categories.

A list of nine contenders up for the Logies Hall of Fame were leaked this morning by The Australian, who had an unauthorised peek at this year’s ballot.

The Hall of Fame Gold Logie is awarded for “outstanding and sustained contribution” to television by an individual or televsion program.

This year, Network Ten’s cult favourite ‘Prisoner’, which ran from 1979 to 1986, has been put forward as a contender for this year’s industry voted award. Should it win, it’d mark only the fourth television program to receive the honour.

ABC’s ‘Four Corners’, Ten’s ‘Neighbours’ and ABC’s ‘Play School’ were all previously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992, 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Other names in contention this year are: retired newsreaders Brian Henderson and Ian Ross, the late Brian Naylor, who was killed last year in the Black Saturday bushfires, SBS’s George Negus, sports presenters Ken Sutcliffe and Les Murray, Foxtel presenter Maggie Tabberer and ‘Home and Away’ actor Ray Meagher.

The 52nd Annual TV Week Logie Awards will be televised on May 2 on the Nine Network.

The comedy genius is set to host the 67th annual Golden Globe awards on January 17, 2010.

Ricky Gervais

NBC have recruited comedy genius Ricky Gervais to host the 67th annual Golden Globes, to be broadcast live on January 17.

The film and television awards ceremony has gone without a host since 1995, when John Larroquette (‘Boston Legal’) and Janine Turner (‘Friday Night Lights’) hosted the 52nd gala event.

However, when execs from NBC and Dick Clark Productions sat down with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s president Philip Berk to discuss the upcoming awards, the idea of bringing back the host was raised.

“We never thought a host was necessary,” said Berk. “Only when NBC suggested the idea that a host might enhance the show, my response was the only person we could consider for the task would be Ricky Gervais, and we were lucky to get him.”

The comedy veteran had often been tipped as a potential host for Hollywood’s other big awards — the Emmys and Oscars. However, on the promise he’d have free rein as host, Gervais jumped at the opportunity to host the Globes.

“I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down,” said Gervais.

Gervais’ latest comedy flick, ‘The Invention of Lying’, co-starring Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe and Tina Fey, is in cinemas now.

The nominations for the 67th annual Golden Globes will be announced December 15.

The Nine Network have picked up the ARIA Awards, after Network Ten dumped the telecast due to high production costs.

The Nine Network have secured a deal with the Australian Recording Industry Association to broadcast the music industry night on nights.

The awards have been broadcast by Network Ten for 15 of the past 16 ceremonies. But with only 1.4 million viewers on average, the network couldn’t continue to justify the reported $2-3 million production costs, especially in these tough economic times.

Nine, who recently announced plans for a second youth oriented channel, believe securing the ARIA Awards will only help enforce their commitment to targeting the younger advertiser-friendly demographics.

“Music will form an important ingredient for our new under 40s multichannel, launching later this year,” said Peter Wiltshire, Nine’s director of sales and marketing.

ARIA chairman Ed St John said ”We are thrilled to be able to make this significant announcement in such a challenging economic climate, and to welcome our new free-to-air broadcast partner, the Nine Network.”

The annual award show will be held on November 26 at the Acer Arena in Sydney.

It’s unclear at this stage whether Rove McManus’ Roving Enterprises, who’ve produced the awards since 2002, will continue backing the event for the Nine Network.

Source: The Daily Telegraph and Yahoo!7 News via TV Tonight

Neil Patrick Harris from 'How I Met You Mother' looks to be the front runner to host this year's Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20th.

According to Variety, it’s going to be one “legendary” Emmycast.

Neil Patrick Harris, currently know for his role as Barney Stinson on ‘How I Met Your Mother’, looks to be the front runner to host the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

While no deal has been closed yet, sources say the actor is currently in the middle of cutting a deal with CBS and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Harris recently received rave reviews as host of this year’s Tony Awards, which were held on June 7th on CBS. So it’s no wonder the network approached the comedy actor to front this year’s night of nights for TV.

Emmycast executive producer, Don Mischer, is under immense pressure from the network and Academy, after last year’s Awards were widely panned for the decision to use five reality TV show personalities as co-hosts.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences continue their splitting of categories and potential nominees.

Following on from a number changes to this year’s Emmy Awards categories, The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have decided to split the “variety, music or comedy series and specials” category each into two separate awards. One for “series” and another for “special events”.

Meaning popular comedy programs like ‘The Daily Show’ will no longer have to face off with big events like the Academy Awards.

Also, each category will feature a separate award for directing and another for writing. Until now, directors and writers from the same “variety, music or comedy series” or “special” were in competition each other. With these new changes, they will now compete for separate awards.

“The Television Academy’s board of governors, writers and directors peer groups have long wanted to see separate competitions for the VMC series and specials,” TV Academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner said. “Now, writers and directors working on both VMC series and specials will take part in competitions that recognize the creative challenges posed by each format, as well as the talent required and accomplishments possible in both the series and specials categories.”

This year’s Creative Emmys are scheduled for September 12, and are set to air on September 19 on E!, while the Primetime Emmys will be held and broadcast on September 20 on CBS.

Australian multi-platform drama 'Scorched' has won an International Digital Emmy® Award.

‘Scorched’ nominated for International Digital Emmy

Original article written – March 15, 2009

Producers of last year’s multi-platform drama ’Scorched’, Marcus Gillezeau and Ellenor Cox and their collaborators Michael O’Neill and Brad Hayward have been nominated for International Digital Emmy® Awards.

“Screen Australia is very proud to have provided support for both the telemovie and online platform of Scorched, and we congratulate the team on this fantastic achievement,” said Ruth Harley, Screen Australia’s Chief Executive Officer.

The International Digital Emmy® Awards recognize excellence in content created and designed for viewer interaction and/or delivery on a digital platform.

The ceremony will be held at the 2009 MIPTV Conference in Cannes, France, on 30 March.

UPDATE: ’Scorched’ wins International Digital Emmy

‘Scorched’ has won the “Fiction” International Digital Emmy Award given out at MIP TV in Cannes on Monday.

“It took us five years to put this together,” said “Scorched” producer and helmer Marcus Gillezeau. “There was no financing structure in Australia for new media projects like ours.”

With only three International Digital Emmy Awards presented each year, Gillezeau hopes the win will encourage emerging filmmakers to explore new media.

How will the financial crisis impact this year's TV Week Logie Awards?

The already impoverished TV Week Logie Awards are set to be even lower-key this year with budgetary cuts and a trimmed invitation list.

If you’ve seen the Logies before, and let’s face it, who hasn’t. Then you probably know how much they pale in comparison to the Emmy Awards or the Oscars, if not purely just in star power.

Well it looks as though the current financial climate is set to take a bit of a toll on the Aussie awards show, with TV Week editor Emma Nolan confirming that the budget will be slashed for this year’s ceremony.

“We are now in the process of reviewing the invitation list and are also looking at budget cuts,” Nolan said.

“But it’s a very important year for the Logies as they’re the 51st, representing a new era for the awards in terms of the event, coverage and actual show.

Event companies have reportedly been challenged to “take it to a new level” on less money.

So while we’re unlikely to see any big stars this year, hopefully the top notch shows in the contention for awards, like Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities and Packed to the Rafters, are enough to pull the show completely out of the gutter.

It has also been reported that Gretel Killeen may host this year’s event, making her only the second woman to host the Logies in it’s 51 year history.

The 2009 TV Week Logie Awards will take place in May at the Crown Casino, Melbourne.
