According to ComingSoon.net, Nestor Carbonell is the favourite to play Khan in the ‘Star Trek’ sequel.

While Khan isn’t even confirmed to be making an appearance in the next film — as the script is still in development — it’s believed that Carbonell would be the favourite to take over the iconic role if production began today.

Carbonell plays Richard Alpert in the J.J. Abrams’ drama ‘Lost’, so it’s entirely plausible that there’s some truth to this rumour.

Abrams has also yet to confirm whether he’d be back to direct the next instalment, however he’s already signed on as producer through his production company Bad Robot.

The 'High School Musical' director has pulled out of the film's remake, set to star 'Gossip Girl's' Chace Crawford.

Kenny Ortega, director of the popular ‘High School Musical’ Disney Channel movies and subsequent feature film, has pulled out as director of the upcoming ‘Footloose’ remake over differences with Paramount Pictures.

Based on the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon, ‘Footloose’ follows a city kid who moves to a conservative town and rebels against its no-dance law.

Insider sources say Ortega wanted to make a film with elaborately staged musical numbers at a budget of around $30 million, however Paramount production chief Adam Goodman wanted an edgier drama with less emphasis on the musical numbers and a budget around $25 million or less.

The studio is now on the look out for a new director who will be ready to begin production in March, when Chace Crawford, who’s signed on to star, is on hiatus from ‘Gossip Girl’.

The film is also set to star US ‘Dancing With the Stars’ pro dancer and country music singer Julianne Hough.

Ortega’s latest and arguable biggest film of his career, the Michael Jackson concert film ‘This Is It’, is due for release this Wednesday worldwide.

Creator Matt Groening and showrunner Al Jean say there's no 'Simpsons' movie sequel in the cards, at least until the TV series wraps for good.

No 'Simpsons' movie sequel in the cards just yet.

The creators of ‘The Simpsons’ have ruled out making a second ‘Simpsons’ movie, at least until the TV series has finally wrapped.

Matt Groening and showrunner Al Jean said that making the series and producing the movie was so exhausting that a sequel remains a distant prospect.

“It took 18 years to get around to doing the movie,” said Groening. “We got very frustrated. We thought it would take two years but it ended up taking four. Some day maybe we’ll do another one — but don’t hold your breath.”

As for when the record-breaking animated series might come to and end, the pair suggested that the final season was not in in sight.

“We cannot predict the end because we can’t believe we are still here today,” Groening said.

“We are contracted to do two more seasons following this one. I gave up predicting the end a long time ago,” added Jean.

Groening and Jean are at Mipcom in Cannes to celebrate the 20th anniversary of ‘The Simpsons’, where they will receive the inaugural Mipcom Creative Icon Award.

Caitlin Stasey (‘Neighbours’) and Lincoln Lewis (‘Home and Away’) are set to star in Stuart Beattie’s film adaptation of James Marden’s novel ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’.

19-year old Stasey has been cast as Ellie Linton, the main character in the ‘Tomorrow’ series.

“There was an exhaustive audition process and I have been privileged to see some very talented young actors,” said Beattie.

“Caitlin captured the perfect balance of intelligence, vulnerability and strength that is essential to this character.”

Lewis, 21, announced his casting as Kevin Holmes in the film following his departure from ‘Home and Away’ on Seven’s ‘Sunrise’.

“I will be filming my last scenes as Geoff Campbell tomorrow, and I am going to miss Summer Bay so much – the cast and crew have become my family over the last two and a half years. Ray Meagher has been a mentor and I have learnt so much from my time at Home and Away.”

“I cannot thank the fans and viewers enough for their support over my time on the show, hopefully they will enjoy Tomorrow When The War Began.”

The series of books follows a group of teenagers who band together to fight, following Australia’s invasion from an unknown enemy.

‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ will mark Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie’s directorial debut, after penning a number of big Hollywood features, including ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’, ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’, ‘Australia’ and a spec script for the highly anticipated ‘Halo’ movie.

Filming on ‘Tomorrow’ is set to take place in the Hunter Valley at the end of September, followed by production at Sydney’s Fox Studios Australia.

‘Tomorrow When the War Began’, which is pegged as the new ‘Twilight’ or ‘Harry Potter’ film phenomenon, is being produced by Ambience Entertainment and Omnilab with assistance from Screen Australia the New South Wales Film and Television Office. Paramount Pictures will distribute.

Meanwhile, production forges ahead on the remake of 80’s film ‘Red Dawn’, which starred the late Patrick Swayze.

Like the ‘Tomorrow’ series, ‘Red Dawn’ follows a group of teenagers who look to save their town from an invasion.

The new ‘Red Dawn’ is similarly being directed by a first time director, Dan Bradley, who served as a second assistant director on ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ and ‘Quantum of Solace’. Carl Ellsworth penned the screenplay.

To draw yet another eerily similarity between the two projects, ‘Red Dawn’ is set to star former Australian soap stars stars Isabel Lucas, 24, and Chris Hemsworth, 26, of ‘Home and Away’ fame.

Both young actors have started to make names for themselves in Hollywood.

Lucas recently starred in ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ and is set to appear in HBO and the Seven Network’s war mini-series ‘The Pacific’ from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Hemsworth, who made his big US debut in J.J. Abram’s ‘Star Trek’ is currently prepping to star in Kenneth Branagh’s epic ‘Thor’.

Lucas will play Erica Mason in ‘Red Dawn’, played by Lea Thompson in the original, Hemsworth will play Jed Eckert, the role originally portrayed by Swayze.

‘Red Dawn’ is being produced by Contrafilm and will be distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in North America.

With both ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ and ‘Red Dawn’ scheduled for a 2010 release, it could make for a very interesting war at the box office, no pun intended.

J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci give us the low down on the upcoming 'Star Trek' and 'Mission Impossible' sequels.

J.J. Abrams

The Los Angeles Times’ Geoff Boucher caught up with J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci in Vancouver on the set of ‘Fringe’, where he had the chance to ask about the upcoming sequel to ‘Star Trek’.

Abrams, who directed 2009’s ‘Star Trek’, spoke of his ambition to make a sequel that is worthy of audiences, and not just another movie made for the sake of it.

“The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters — their meeting each and galvanizing that family — that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission,” says Abrams.

“It needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story,” he adds.

“There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn’t mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths — truths connected to what we live — that elevates any story — that’s true with any story.”

While the wheels are definitely in motion for the sequel, co-writer Orci explains theres still a long way to go.

“We’ve literally had two meetings now. We haven’t decided anything but we’re starting to circle around some ideas,” he says.

SCI FI Wire also chatted with Abrams about the fourth installment of ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise. Here’s what he had to say.

Any momentum on Mission: Impossible IV?

Abrams: Yeah, we have a really cool story. It’s being written right now by Andre Nemec and Josh Applebaum.

What’s your ETA on when you’ll see the draft?

Abrams: We’re hoping to get it soon, like by the end of the year.

Could it work out for you to direct it?

Abrams: I’m open to anything.

Abrams and Orci’s television series ‘Fringe’ returns for its second season tomorrow on FOX. The series stars Australia’s Anna Torv and John Noble.

'Battlestar Galactica' will be getting the big-screen treatment with a new feature film helmed by director Bryan Singer.

Universal Pictures have confirmed rumours that ‘Battlestar Galactica’ will be making the jump to the big screen once again.

Rumours began circulating over reports that the studio had new plans to bring the series to the big screen, with director Bryan Singer (‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘X-Men’, ‘Valkyrie’) attached.

This week, the studio have confirmed these rumours announcing Singer as director. He’ll also produce the film along side original 1978 series creator Glen Larson.

The film however is not expected to be continuation of the recent popular SciFi (now SyFy) series, but a complete re-imagining of the ‘Battlestar’ universe.

With J.J. Abrams so big right now, it’s no surprise that Tom Cruise and Paramount were eager to re-team with Abrams on the next ‘Mission Impossible’ flick.

While Abrams is currently only attached as a producer, it has now been announced that fellow ‘Alias’ alumni Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec will pen the screenplay, which will be based on an idea the duo conceived with Abrams.

“I’ve been looking forward to working with Josh and Andre again for years,” Abrams said. “Their sense of balance between character and action is wonderful, which I know is hugely important to Tom as well. We’re off to an exciting start, so, as usual, fingers crossed.”

Applebaum and Nemec served as writers and co-producers on the Abrams created spy-series ‘Alias’ for four seasons. The two then went on to create the short lived drama ‘October Road’ and adapted ‘Life on Mars’ for US television. Both are currently serving as executive producers on ABC Studios’ upcoming series ‘Happy Town’.

‘Mission Impossible IV’ is currently scheduled for a 2011 release.

'Baywatch' is set to make waves once again, with Jeremy Garelick ('The Hangover') on board to rewrite and direct the bigscreen adaptation.

'Baywatch' is headed to the bigscreen. Will the Hoff be making an appearance?

In case plastic people running around in swimsuits trying to save drowning people wasn’t funny enough, Paramount Pictures have hired comedy writer Jeremy Garelick to rewrite and direct the bigscreen adaptation of the 90’s television series ‘Baywatch’.

Garelick, whose uncredited rewrite of the comedy ’The Hangover’ has been receiving a number of accolades, is set to bring even more laughs to what is presumable already quite laughable material.

The project is currently being developed by Paramount, under Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman, who brought the project with him when he left DreamWorks SKG. The later reportedly paid seven figures for the original remake rights in 2005 and hired Jay Scherick and David Ronn to pen the screenplay.

Garelick was sent the original DreamWorks script, which was heavy on action, but saw an opportunity to turn it into a comedy.

“It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to ‘Stripes’ and ‘Police Academy,’ the comedies I loved growing up,” Garelick said. “Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were.”

The film will be co-financed by Paramount and Cold Spring Pictures under producers Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson of Contrafilm and original ‘Baywatch’ producers Michael Berk, Doug Schwartz, Greg Bonann and Michelle Berk.

Is TV cult favourite 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' making a return to her roots on the big screen, but without Joss Whedon?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ could be making a return to the big screen, but without creator Joss Whedon.

The project isn’t set up at a studio, however Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison are believed to be working on the film touted as a remake or relaunch, with the original 1992 film director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui.

The producers have not ruled out Whedon’s involvement in the project, but have yet to reach out to him.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly about the idea of a new ‘Buffy’ film without him, Whedon casually said ”I hope it’s cool”.

The new film is said to have no connections to the TV series and will also do without it’s popular assortment of supporting characters; including Angel, Willow, Xander and Spike.

Vertigo and Kuzui are hoping to reboot the franchise without treading on the existing TV universe that has been treasured by fans. Their plans are to make it darker and more of an event-sized movie.

Kuzui has held onto the rights to ‘Buffy’ ever since she discovered the original screenplay written by Whedon predating the 1992 film.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman and Whedon to make the TV series, which became a cult phenomenon for 20th Century Fox Television and The WB in 1997.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creator of the ‘Gladiators’ television format, Johnny Ferraro, is currently in development on a live-action adaptation for the bigscreen.

Ferraro says ‘Gladiators’ was originally conceived as a film, but the property “took a detour and became a TV phenomenon.”

The film will be based on the TV show ‘American Gladiators’ which originated in 1988 and has since gone on to air in more than 90 countries and adapted for local markets in 14 countries, including Australia, the UK, Germany and Japan.

Scott Mednick, former chief marketing officer at Legendary Pictures, will produce the bigscreen adaptation, with the goal of creating an action story that takes place inside the world Ferraro has created.

“I look forward to creating a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters,” Mednick said.

Sunset Pictures are funding the development of the film, with production company president Martin Guigui executive producing with Joe Allegro and Ferraro.

'Star Trek' may not even be out yet, but that's not stopping Paramount Pictures from moving forward with a sequel.

‘Star Trek’ may not even be out yet, but that’s not stopping Paramount Pictures from moving forward with a sequel.

Variety reports that J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the new film, will be back to produce the follow-up alongside fellow Bad Robot producer Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will direct the sequel.

The studio has also brought back Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay.

The story is still in early stages, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to Paramount by Christmas for a likely June-July 2011 release.

“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” Kurtzman said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

Orci and Kurtzman have worked closely with J.J. Abrams ever since their writing stint on ‘Alias’, the three penned the Abrams’ directed ‘Mission Impossible III’ and co-created FOX’s ‘Fringe’.

Abrams and Lindelof co-created ‘Lost’ with fellow show-runner Carlton Cuse, all three currently server as executive producers on the ABC drama.

The world premiere for ‘Star Trek’ will be held April 7 at the Sydney Opera House, with the theatrical release set for a month later on May 7 in Australia.

Lindsay Lohan's latest comedy 'Labor Pains', will go straight to cable and DVD over the (US) summer.

If you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Lindsay Lohan, think again.

Lohan’s latest comedy flick ‘Labor Pains’ will make its debut on cable TV over the (US) summer with a DVD release planned shortly after in August.

The comedy film, set to air on ABC Family, has so far been unable to secure a domestic theatrical release. A source close to the project has said that one of the producers is currently looking to raise prints and advertising funds for a small theatrical window.

‘Labor Pains’ stars Lohan as a woman who fakes a pregnancy to keep her job, only to find she must keep up the ruse for the full three trimesters. The film also stars Chris Parnell, Cheryl Hines and Janeane Garofalo.

The film was was produced by Nu Image/Millennium Films in association with Overnight Productions and Plum Pictures.

Lohan was last seen on ABC’s ‘Ugly Betty’, where her role in the comedy series was cut short due to Lohan’s on-set antics.

The trailer has landed and might I say, holy be-jesus! J.J. Abrams has done it again! Even if you’re like me and have never even seen a “Star Trek” film before, but love J.J. Abrams’ television work, this film looks like it could be for everyone (at least the sci-fi/action film fans out there).
