Kerry O’Brien will interview former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair tomorrow, Tuesday 7 September, to air on The 7.30 Report tomorrow night.

In the interview, Blair will discuss his recently released memoir and answer questions about his policies during his 10 years as the British PM.

The 7.30 Report exclusive can be seen on ABC1 and will be simulcast on ABC News 24. It is also streamed live at abc.net.au/news. The interview can be watched on ABC iView the following day.

Note: If there are significant developments in the Australian leadership outcome, the broadcast of Tony Blair’s interview may be postponed until Wednesday evening.

This new series will begin on Nine/WIN on Tuesday September 14th at 9pm.

Jamie Oliver

ABC have renewed ‘Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution’ on the back of its Emmy win for most outstanding reality series.

The network have picked up the show for an addition six-episode season, which will go into production last this year/early next year.

The new season will focus on the people of Los Angeles and provide a more broad exploration of healthy eating habits in schools, homes, workplaces and even restaurants.

The series, which is proceeded by Ryan Seacrest Productions and Fresh One, is based on the original UK concept, which saw Jamie Oliver help revolutionise Britain’s school dinners (lunch programs).

The first season of ‘Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution’ recently completed its run on Network Ten.

Todd Lasance and Craig McLachlan

According to the Sunday Telegraph, Todd Lasance (‘Home and Away’) and Craig McLachlan (‘Neighbours’) are set to join the cast of Nine’s ‘Rescue: Special Ops’.

The former soap stars will join the Sydney-set rescue drama when the show returns for its third season next year.

Lasance will play a member of a rival rescue firm that goes up against the show’s main team.

The 25-year old will next be seen in the first of Nine’s ‘Underbelly’ telemovies, ‘Tell Them Lucifer Was Here’. He will also star in the small-screen adaptation of Tim Winton’s award-winning novel ‘Cloudstreet’, which will premiere next year on Showcase.

McLachlan joins ‘Rescue’ following several guest roles on a number of Australian dramas and comedies, including Seven’s ‘Packed to the Rafters’, ‘City Homicide’ and the ABC’s ‘Lowdown’ and ‘The Cut’.

Production on the 22-episode third season of ‘Rescue: Special Ops’ commences this week in Sydney.

Jesinta Campbell

Australian Miss Universe entrant Jesinta Campbell has joined the team of Seven’s ‘Morning Show’ as a guest reporter.

The 19-year old, who came in third place as Miss Congeniality in last month’s worldwide beauty pageant, will make her television debut, covering fashion, movie premieres and award evenings for the Seven Network.

“I have landed some television presenting roles which I am very excited about,” said Campbell, adding “I have been approached by celebrity agents”.

But the Queensland girl says she has no desire to build a career as a model or enter other beauty pageants.

“Modelling is fun but my future goals are with my charity work,” she said.

Campbell will take on her ‘Morning Show’ role while continuing to complete her Miss Universe Australia duties over the next nine months.

Campbell’s signing with the Seven Network comes just a week after the signing of last year’s Australian Miss Universe contestant Rachel Finch.

Both follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Hawkins, who won the crown of Miss Universe back in 2004.

It’s a tragedy if one child suffers abuse, but how do you respond when you know it is happening to 33, 000 children? ABC TV’s Geraldine Doogue leads a group conversation with child welfare professionals as well as people/families with experience of child abuse and neglect to discuss the issues surrounding this important subject. Filmed live with a studio audience, Geraldine will introduce a short film ‘Polly and Me’ by filmmaker Ian Darling before kicking off a discussion focusing on the issues raised by the film. Child abuse and neglect is one of Australia’s most significant social problems. Last year an enormous number of Australian children were proven to have been abused or neglected with many others slipping through society’s cracks without detection. Child protection and well-being is everyone’s business. The ‘Kids at Risk’ forum will address how our society can take action to improve the lot of our children at risk.

Polly and Me

Just because we don’t see her, it doesn’t mean she isn’t there….. Behind closed doors unfolds a story of neglect. An 8-year-old girl lives alone with her mother and dreams of a better life beyond the walls of their small and dingy apartment. When an invitation arrives to a picnic in the park, her mother promises to take her. But so far life has been a series of broken promises. Maybe this time will be different. ‘Polly and Me’ is the story of one little girl who has fallen between the cracks, and reminds us that just because we don’t see her, it doesn’t mean she isn’t there.

I can’t say this is pleasant viewing. It is however an important program that should be viewed. Being aware, informed and educated is something that can prevent neglect and abuse and can perhaps allow people to see signs of these things happening around them.

In saying all this, I again caution viewers. The short film is very very confronting. You will see things that will make you angry and make you cry. It is something that will be on your mind for some time. Most things are implied, so you don’t see sexual abuse as an example, as the camera will cut away bit you know exactly what is happening. Maybe this is something that has affected you in the past and you may be extra sensitive.

Hamish McLachlan leads a star-studded ‘Game Day Prime Time’ panel, supported by two of the best in the business, dual premiership captain Tom Harley and crowd favourite Matthew Richardson, to review and reveal the issues at the centre of the game during the AFL finals series.

The man all footy fans want to hear from Ben Cousins also joins Seven’s ‘Game Day Prime Time’ throughout September to deliver his unique expert analysis and insight into the 2010 finals series, just two weeks after his emotional farewell from the game.

And each week Brownlow medallist Jason Akermanis tells us what’s on his mind with an Aker attack.

“The Game Day team has delivered fans the latest on AFL with plenty of spirit, fun, knowledge and passion on Sunday mornings for three years now, so it stands to reason they go into prime time in September,” said Channel Seven Melbourne general manager Lewis Martin.

‘Game Day Prime Time’ will tackle all the big footy issues, preview the weekend’s finals and have a bit of fun along the way. The show will take a look at the frantic finishes, biggest hits, marks and goals, and coaches’ reactions.

The show will air at 7:30pm Thursdays on Channel Seven in the Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth markets across September. It will also run just after midnight the same night on 7TWO which includes the Sydney and Brisbane market.

Every year thousands of poor African children die from Noma, a horrifying tropical disease that eats away their face. Those who don’t die are horribly disfigured. They lead lives of unbearable shame and are often hidden away by their families. They are stigmatised and prevented from going to school. Many cannot eat properly because their jaw is so damaged. Some of the “cursed’’ children are even abandoned. It is all the more shocking considering this disease is caused by malnutrition. In 2008, BBC television presenter Ben Fogle contracted the shocking flesh-eating disease Leishmaniasis that could have destroyed his face. He was lucky enough to be treated rapidly by world experts in tropical medicine and recovered with little effects. His interest therefore was heightened in the welfare of the blighted African victims of Noma. He meets here with the children in Ethiopia whose lives have been crippled by the disease and goes with the team of volunteer Western cosmetic surgeons who perform radical surgery in Addis Adaba on the worst affected. The visiting medics cannot save them all and the surgeons are forced to make the agonising decisions on which children they can help and who they must send home. Ben follows the surgeons during their two-weeks of amazing transformative surgery and then a month later, he returns to Ethiopia to visit the recovering patients. For the victims, a new face means a new life.

There is the first review I have written whilst in tears. The disease is a disease – it does not shock me. It pains me that this flesh eating disease is both preventable and curable through having access to a good diet and simple antibiotics. As I finish this review and return to my chai latte, I cannot fathom this other world we live in.

I was a little skeptical about “The X factor’. On one hand, it had a top notch judging panel, I knew it would have a big budget and set and that there is plenty of talent in Australia that could be showcased. On the other hand, I was never for Matthew Newton being host and it had failed when screened on Network Ten.

Apart from the Matthew Newton saga, I was relieved to find that the show has turned out better than expected. The judging panel are not only professional and well equipped for the position but there is a good mix. Guy and Natalie are obviously going to be the more supportive and kinder judges and Ronan and Kyle will have a more ‘speak their mind’ philosphy to judging. I will put the host debate to one side, as it really has not affected the show’s actual production. The talent is still there.

In terms of the talent, already we have our characters. There is the ‘Frank Sinatara’ guy, the weird looking guy from Chile with a massive voice, the girl that lives in a sea container, the guy called Darcy, the guy looking for his Dad and the amazing girl that had her feet kissed by Kyle. Seven have found a great balance between showing off the high performances and giving us a few chuckles with the really bad performances.

I will be following the series and I look forward to covering it on the site.

However, the only concern is the show being up against ‘Junior MasterChef’. Can there be room for two giant franchises?

If you missed the first week’s of auditions you can catch the first three episodes on Saturday September 4th at 12:45pm and then the fourth episode on Sunday September 5th at 10am in Sydney and Brisbane and 11am in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The ‘King of the Hill’ episode scheduled for today will be moved forward to next week. As a general rule, Sunday’s episode of ‘The X Factor’ will air repeated at 6:25am each Monday morning on 7Two and then again at around 3pm on 7Two. The Monday episode on Seven will be repeated each Tuesday at 6:25am and then again at around 3:30pm each Tuesday afternoon.

Prime Time Game Day

‘Game Day’ will air for three weeks over the AFL finals series in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth at 7:30pm from Thursday September 9th.Seven did say back in April that ‘The Bounce’ would return during the finals but there is no sign of it.

AFL Update

This is a hard amendment to explain, but here goes…..

Melbourne

For the next two weeks (Friday September 10th and 17th), ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ will air at 7pm with AFL Finals airing at 8pm.

That means ‘Home and Away’ will be missed for two Fridays. For about two and a half that means that Sydney and Brisbane viewers will be a “day ahead” with episodes as there is no usual double episode catch up on Thursdays. However, when Sydney and Brisbane viewers are showing the season final of ‘The Matty Johns Show’ on Thursday September 30th at 7:30pm, other markets will get a 90 minute catch up of ‘Home and Away’ in that slot.

Adelaide

For the next two weeks (Friday September 10th and 17th), the AFL Finals series will air at 7pm and ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ will air at 6:30pm the following night (Saturday nights). Same scenario as Melbourne in relation to Home and Away.

Perth

For the next two weeks (Friday September 10th and 17th), the AFL Finals series will air at 6:30pm and ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ will air at 6:30pm the following night (Saturday nights). Same scenario as Melbourne in relation to Home and Away. ‘Today Tonight’ is out for those two Friday nights.

City Homicide

On Wednesday 15th, Sydney and Brisbane viewers will get the usual new episode followed by a repeat. However, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth viewers will get two new episodes to make up for no episode in those markets the following week due to AFL Grand Final related programming.

The Suspects – True Australian Thrillers

The season final will air on Wednesday September 22nd at 10:30pm. All episodes in the series have been played.

Find My Family

When the series aired on Monday nights earlier in the year, two episodes in the season were not screened. These two episodes will air at 3pm over two days (Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd September) in Sydney and Perth. Other markets have school holiday programming that week so it will air in other markets about two weeks later.

Ghost Whisperer

Sydney and Brisbane were 1 episode behind but they will catch up on Thursday September 23rd with episode 21. Due to AFL themed programming, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth viewers will not get an episode that night. That means, all markets will see the final ever episode on Thursday  September 30th.

The Xtra Factor

Begins on 7Two on Sunday September 19th at 9:45pm and then repeated Monday September 20th at 4pm. The Monday ‘Xtra Factor’ will air at 8:30pm on Monday September 20th and repeated at 4pm on Wednesday September 21st.

October Road

This new series begins Monday September 20th at 9:30pm on 7Two.

Popular author Nick Garrett hopes to get over his writer’s block by going back to his small hometown. Once back home on October Road, he is forced to face the people he wrote about unfavourably in his successful novel including his widowed father, his group of friends he said goodbye to shortly after high school graduation and the ex-girlfriend who may have had his child. Starring BRYAN GREENBERG, LAURA PREPON, TOM BERENGER and WARREN CHRISTIE.

Mistresses

Before 7Two unleashes the new season of ‘Mistresses’ they will re run the first 6 part season starting on Monday September 20th at 10:30pm.

Lewis

Three seasons of Lewis have now been screened in every market across Australia. The latest season (Season 4) has only been screened in Sydney and Brisbane. It is now out of the schedule in week commencing September 19th, so it looks like southern states will have to wait on seeing the latest season.

Rules of Engagement / The Simpsons

Channel 10 have been really good this year in playing out series and not pulling shows before their natural season end. In fact, since the beginning of this year’s ratings season in February, only three shows have been pulled from the Ten schedule without a return date. Two of those (Supernatural and The Cleveland Show) have at least been announced for the new ‘Eleven’ channel. In giving Ten this support, it is to my disappointment that ‘Rules of Engagement’ and ‘The Simpsons’ have been pulled with just 1 and 2 episodes remaining respectively. There are programming changes and reasons for this, but playing every episode of ‘Rules’ except the season finale is really not cool. Ten could have aired at 6pm next Sunday (September 12th) instead of a repeat of ‘The Simpsons’. Also, Ten has a double new episode of ‘The Simpsons’ planned for September 15th but then the show is out of the schedule, replaced with fast tracked ‘Glee’ the following week. Just two episodes of the season will remain. Ten are repeating ‘The Simpsons Movie’ on Saturday September 25th at 6pm with a repeat episode of the normal show before and after that. One option surely would have been to run the movie at 6pm and show a double episode season finale straight after.

Modern Family

Season final on Sunday September 19th at 7pm on Ten.

Glee

The season is being fast tracked by Ten and airs from Wednesday September 22nd at 7:30pm.

House

Another show being fast tracked by Ten and its new season begins Wednesday September 22nd at 8:30pm. A repeat of ‘Lie to Me’ airs at 9:30pm.

There is daytime changes for WIN regional areas plus WIN operated Nine stations in Adelaide and Perth. ‘Nine Morning News’ is being dropped in these markets and will be replaced by ‘Alive and Cooking’ which moves from 3pm to 11am and then at 11:30 will be a new weekday show called ‘Daily’. ‘Entertainment Tonight’ will make its return to these markets by being networked at 3pm weekdays. All these changes begin Monday September 6th on WIN and Nine in Adelaide and Perth only.

Hot Pursuit

This new series begins on Nine from Sunday September 12th at 7pm

Specially trained for high speed pursuits in their turbocharged police cars, elite units patrol the motorways, roads, towns and suburbs around London. Tonight they’re hot on the trail of a stolen BMW, hoping it will lead them to a highly organised gang of car thieves.

Nine appears to be slotting in Sunday movies from September 12th. The first one being ‘Iron Man’ at 8:30pm.

Collision Course airing next on Foreign Correspondent is the most detailed and revealing investigation of the ill fated voyage to date. From the BBC’s Panorama team, it features never-before-seen video from on-board the Mavi Marmara and first-person accounts from both sides, never before heard. We learn a great deal more about IHH – the Turkish humanitarian group that organised the voyage – and a lot more about Israel’s preparedness and intelligence.

Monday 6 September at 8.30pm on ABC1

Liam is five years old. As he grew, his parents realised he had a condition that made learning difficult. Then he had what seemed to be an epileptic fit. His doctor thought the young boy had Dravet syndrome, but the only way to be sure was to have a genetic test to see if Liam had a crucial gene linked with epilepsy.

It should have been straightforward. After all, Australian scientists discovered the gene, linked it to epilepsy, patented it and developed a diagnostic test. The problem is that those researchers sold the rights to another Australian company that wants a return on its investment. To make that return it charges a license fee, which means it costs $2,000 every time the test is carried out in Australia.

The hospital where Liam was being treated couldn’t afford to pay the fee, and instead sent the sample to be tested overseas where they were charged just one third of the original asking price. But this option took more time, leaving the young boy and his family waiting in distress.

Liam’s family are not the only ones frustrated with a situation that allows a company to charge whatever it likes to confirm a patient has a serious health condition, simply because it holds patent rights to a particular gene.

And consumer health activists are not sitting still. In the United States, they took the company that held patent rights over a gene linked to breast cancer to court. The activists argued it was illegal to hold patents on naturally occurring mutant breast cancer genes. The judge agreed, and now the issue is set to be tested at the very top of the American legal system. In Australia, a similar court battle is looming.

Millions of dollars now hang in the balance. Patients are understandably confused and the biotech companies will not easily give up their rights. They warn that without a patent, medical research will diminish and patients will suffer.

This week on Four Corners, reporter Andrew Fowler travels to the United States and around Australia to hear from both sides in this high-stakes battle. He talks to the researchers, patent lawyers and families who have been forced to pay significant amounts of money to find out if they have genes linked to potentially life-threatening conditions.

Who is right? Can the very basis of life itself be patented and sold? Is it possible that a unique gene that makes us what we are could be patented by someone we don’t know and then franchised out to a major corporation?

”Body Corporate” goes to air on Monday 6th September at 8.30pm on ABC1. It is replayed on ABC1 on Tuesday 7th September at 11.35pm. Seven News and Today Tonight won their timeslots in total people with 1,483,000 and 1,497,000 respectively.  Seven News also won in 18-49 and 25-54, but came third in 16-39.  Today Tonight came second in 18-49 and 25-54 and third in 16-39.  Nine News and A Current Affair came second in total people with 1,246,000 and 1,240,000 respectively.  A Current Affair won its timeslot in 18-49, 16-39 and 25-54 while Nine News came second to Seven in 18-49 and 25-54, and second to Ten in 16-39.  Simpsons on Ten won 16-39, but Neighbours came second to Nine in 16-39.

At 7 o’clock ABC1 News won the timeslot with 1,161,000 total viewers, but came fourth in all key demographics.  Two & A Half Men came second in total people with 1,052,000 and also won 18-49 and 25-54.  Home and Away came third in total people with 1,035,000, and also came third in 18-49, 16-39 and 25-54.  7pm Project had 921,000 total viewers and won the 16-39, but came second to Nine in 18-49 and 25-54.

The special Hooters episode of Undercover Boss obviously scheduled by Ten to take away from X Factor, worked well with a timeslot win in total people with 1,355,000  and also easily winning 18-49, 16-39 and 25-54. Undercover Boss was the top show of the night in 18-49 and 16-39.  X Factor dropped again from its Tuesday revival, but not quite as far as Monday’s premiere with 1,332,000 total viewers and came second to Ten in 18-49, 16-39 and 25-54.  Another Two & A Half Men repeat at 7.30pm on Nine had 1,092,000 total viewers while Hot Property had 946,000.  Both shows came third in all key demographics.  7.30pm Report and New Inventors on ABC1 had 959,000 and 743,000 total viewers respectively.

Spicks and Specks and Gruen Transfer won their timeslots with 1,453,000 and 1,391,000 total viewers respectively.  Both shows also won all key demographics.  The return of United States of Tara had 685,000 total viewers, and was ahead of all other 9.30pm shows in all key demographics.  Farmer Wants a Wife had 1,273,000 total viewers, coming second to ABC1 in both total viewers and all key demographics.  RPA at 9.30pm had 945,000, easily winning its timeslot in total people.  Lie to Me and Criminal Intent had 874,000 and 645,000 total people respectively, and both shows came third in all key demographics.  A new/repeat combination of City Homicide on Seven could only manage 747,000 total people and came fourth in all key demographics.

The new Apple TV.

Apple has unveiled the next generation Apple TV, which has been redesigned to bring high definition content to your big screen television.

The new device, which is 80 percent smaller than the previous version, has forgone the high capacity internal hard drive of the previous iteration to make streaming content its main focus.

High definition movie rentals will now start at A$4.99 (previously $5.99), while standard definition rentals will start at A$3.99.

In addition to streaming your existing music and video library from your Mac or PC, the new Apple TV will now be able to stream content wirelessly from your other iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) with the new AirPlay feature.

99¢ high definition TV show rentals were also announced for the US, from ABC and FOX, though TV show rentals don’t appear to be coming to Australia just yet (only the existing A$2.99 TV show purchases will be available).

US customers will also be able to take advantage of Apple TV’s new Netflix streaming, giving subscribers instant access to their Netflix account’s instant-watch queue. Netflix joins the previously available internet services YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe galleries.

The new Apple TV will cost A$129 and will start shipping in 4-weeks time.

4.4 million viewers in the UK tune in for the final-ever episode of 'The Bill'.

ITV1′s long-running police drama ‘The Bill’ came to an end on Tuesday night after 26 seasons and 2400 episodes.

Over 4.4 million viewers in the UK tuned in to farewell Britain’s longest-running drama, just beating rival channel BBC1 by a few hundred thousand viewers.

The BAFTA award-winning drama has been a institution for the ITV network, spanning 27-years on the air and with an impressive line up of actors and guest stars, including Hugh Laurie, John Hannah, Sean Bean, Kiera Knightley, James MacAvoy, David Tennant and even Australia’s own Daniel MacPherson.

ITV announced the cancellation of ‘The Bill’ back in March, citing a drop in ratings.

The two-part series finale of ‘The Bill’ will go to air October 16 with a farewell special to air on October 23 in Australia on ABC1.

Network Ten’s national sales manager, Kylie Rogers said: “As one of Australia’s most popular and successful television brands, it’s no wonder the MasterChef franchise is highly sought after by some of Australia’s biggest household brands. With its emphasis on the kitchen, Junior MasterChef is the perfect fit for both the grocery and kitchen appliance sector.”

• Coles returns to the MasterChef kitchen with a series of tailored commercials and in-show promotions, as well as online recipes and sponsored links on the official Junior MasterChef website. Coles will extend its association with the MasterChef brand by providing grocery items for the Junior MasterChef kitchen and through a series of linked in-store promotions throughout the season.
• Unilever joins Junior MasterChef with a campaign for its premium laundry brand, OMO. The sponsorship will include ‘dirt is good’ commercial spots and a major online consumer promotion encouraging budding cooks to ‘have a go at home’.
• Sunbeam continues its association with the MasterChef franchise as the official supplier of small electrical appliances in the Junior MasterChef kitchen. Sunbeam appliances will be used by contestants and judges throughout the season. Sunbeam, which is also a sponsor of the Junior MasterChef website, will use its online presence to a launch a major consumer Christmas promotion.
• Kellogg’s will be part of the Junior MasterChef experience with online, in-store and on-pack promotions for key cereal brands including Rice Bubbles, Corn Flakes and Sultana Bran. Kellogg’s products will also feature in a Junior MasterChef pressure test.
• Birds Eye joins Junior MasterChef as a first-time sponsor of the franchise. In addition to tailored commercial breaks and a major consumer promotion, Birds Eye is a sponsor of website recipes.
• Meat and Livestock Australia will employ its Junior MasterChef sponsorship to promote the nutritional benefits of beef and lamb through commercial breaks, as well as healthy red meat recipes featuring Junior MasterChef judge and mentor, Anna Gare.

Effective and creative online integration is a key element of TEN’s viewer and client offering. The program’s official website will offer fans a range of exclusive Junior MasterChef content including full- length episodes where fans can catch-up or re-live their favourite Junior MasterChef moments, view contestant profiles, be part of fan forums or download the full range of recipes featured throughout the series.

Plans for the one off special event were released today by the Australian Football League, Panasonic Australia and the Seven Network which will broadcast the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final in its biggest television production this year.

Television viewers will be able to watch the game on digital channel 40 using a 3D television, such as a Panasonic VIERA VT20 3D TV, and compatible eyewear.

Details of the 3D initiative were announced today by Andrew Demetriou, the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Football League, David Leckie, the Chief Executive Officer of Seven Media Group and Steve Rust, Managing Director of Panasonic Australia.

Mr Rust said the broadcast will provide the most realistic viewing experience, immersing audiences in the colour and excitement of the AFL Grand Final.

“This is an opportunity for Panasonic to help showcase one of the biggest and best sporting events in the world in high definition 3D,” Mr Rust said.

“Panasonic wants as many Australians as possible to experience 3D in their homes and we are delighted to join with Seven and the AFL to deliver the first 3D AFL Grand Final to thousands of people around the country.”

The 3D picture is created by capturing two slightly different images using a dedicated 3D camera or rig. Panasonic VIERA 3D televisions then display left and right images alternately for the left and right eyes. In synch with the images displayed, the 3D eyewear rapidly opens and closes left and right shutters. The viewer’s brain then reconstructs the separate images to create a 3D picture.

Commenting, Mr Leckie said: “We are looking forward to meeting the challenge of producing the first live 3D television coverage of an Australian Football League match and it being the biggest game of the year and one of the great moments in sports. We’re delighted to be working with Panasonic to make this happen.”

Mr Demetriou said the league was excited to be partnering with Panasonic and Seven to deliver the broadcast.

“The broadcast of the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final in 3D will represent another fantastic leap forward in the presentation of our game to fans across Australia,” Mr Demetriou said.
“Seven brought us the first colour Grand Final and also brought us the first Grand Final live in Victoria in 1977, with the replay between North Melbourne and Collingwood. This broadcast represents another milestone in the visual history of Australia’s largest game – our only indigenous sport – and the AFL is delighted and thankful with the efforts of Panasonic and Seven.”

More details of the broadcast will be released throughout the AFL Finals series.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority today announced that it will issue licences to the Seven Network and the Nine Network to conduct trial broadcasts of 3D TV in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle, Adelaide and Perth covering the AFL and NRL grand final matches, respectively.

The ACMA also indicated that it will suspend consideration of any further 3D TV trials while it conducts a review of certain spectrum, licensing and consumer policy issues associated with 3D TV.

To assist in this review, the ACMA today released a discussion paper, Temporary trials of 3D TV and other emerging technologies.

‘The world-first, free-to-air trials conducted by the Nine Network and SBS demonstrated some of the challenges of 3D TV technology,’ said ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman. ‘There is still much for the industry in Australia and internationally to learn about 3D TV production, transmission and reception. Accordingly, the ACMA is pleased to facilitate these additional trials by the Seven Network and the Nine Network.’

The additional trials will be conducted in late September/early October. They follow the first round of trials conducted by the Nine Network and SBS between May and July 2010. The first trials covered the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the State of Origin rugby league series. The ACMA has now received reports from the Nine Network and SBS on their first trials of 3D TV. These reports cover consumer, reception, interference and technical issues and are available on the ACMA website.

The new licences, to be issued separately to the Seven Network and the Nine Network, will be valid from 18 September to 8 October 2010. They will enable the Seven Network to provide a live broadcast of the AFL Grand Final on 25 September and the Nine Network to provide a live broadcast of the NRL Grand Final on 3 October.

The ACMA again reiterates that consumers should be aware that trials typically involve lower power transmitters than those used for regular free-to-air services. As a result, not all consumers in trial areas will be able to receive the 3D TV broadcasts, even if they have a 3D television.

‘The ACMA moved quickly to facilitate and then approve the first round of applications for 3D TV trials and considers it appropriate to facilitate these further trials of this evolving technology in September and October. However, the ACMA is suspending authorisation of any additional trials beyond that, until these policy issues have been considered.

‘Vacant spectrum is only available on a temporary basis and technical standards are still evolving. The discussion paper released by the ACMA today is designed to assist interested parties to address these policy issues and to offer views on the future of 3D TV, as well as other emerging technologies,’ said Mr Chapman.

The ACMA is responsible for the planning of spectrum required by free-to-air broadcasters. In this context, the primary focus of the discussion paper is on 3D TV on free-to-air television. However, the ACMA notes that the first Australian 3D TV broadcast was provided in May by the subscription television channel, Fox Sports, and that 3D TV is also potentially suited to other platforms. The ACMA therefore welcomes responses on 3D TV developments from stakeholders who have interests in the subscription television, motion picture, DVD or computer game sectors.

The discussion paper is available on the ACMA website. Submissions close on 15 October 2010. The ACMA’s current intention is to complete its policy review before the end of 2010.

7Two repeated the first episode of The X Factor early this morning at 6:50am, but sent out the amendment after it aired. It also aired an encore at 3pm today, although I did get that amendment a couple of hours before. Rule of thumb – if you see a 6:50am TBA in the advance guides you will know its an encore of ‘The X Factor’ and if there is a TBA about 3pm or 3:30pm on 7Two you will know its an encore. Why Seven want to send out an amendment with almost no notice when they knew it was going there the whole time is beyond me.

Home and Away

There will be a double episode this Thursday September 2nd at 7pm in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. ‘X Factor’ will move to 8pm and there will be just a single repeat ep of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ at 9pm.

In other ratings results Seven’s News at 6pm won in total people with 1,427,000 and in 16-39, but came second to Nine in 18-49 and 25-54.  Nine’s News had 1,367,000 total viewers.  Today Tonight dropped to 1,238,000 and was convincingly beaten by the exclusive Bert and Patti Newton interview on A Current Affair with 1,748,000 which was the top show of the night in total people, 18-49 and 16-39.  ABC1 News at 7pm won the timeslot in total people with 1,145,000 but came fourth in all key demographics.  Two and a Half Men repeat came second in total people with 1,144,000 and won 18-49 and 25-54.  Home & Away was third in the timeslot with 1,013,000 and came third in all key demographics.  7pm Project had 958,000 total viewers, won 16-39 and came second to Nine in 18-49 and 25-54.

Ten’s Undercover Boss at 7.30pm  won its timeslot in 18-49, 16-39 and 25-54 and was only 5000 viewers away from X-Factor for the time that it aired with 1,128,000 total viewers (from 7.32pm-8.35pm).  Good News Week also won its timeslot in 18-49 and 16-39, but was just beaten by Seven in 25-54.  Nine’s Two & A Half Men repeat at 7.30pm, Hot in Cleveland at 8pm and Rescue Special Ops at 8.30pm all came third in total people and third in all key demos.  Secret Millionaire had 684,000 total viewers.  Criminal Minds and Covert Affairs on Seven did will with their later start times getting 975,000 and 565,000 respectively.

The four independent MPs are Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott, Andrew Wilkie and Tony Windsor, with Greens MP Adam Bandt. They will join a range of guests from across Australia’s political spectrum to discuss the realities of a hung Parliament in the context of political history and the possible future of such a parliament.

Led by presenter Jenny Brockie, Insight will examine how a minority government might function and whether it can be effective.
